Tillotson, John

Tillotson, John
(1630–94)
   Archbishop.
Tillotson was educated at the University of Cambridge. A committed Protestant, he advised the seven Bishops who refused to read King James II’s declaration of indulgence in 1688 and in the following year, he was appointed Dean of St Paul’s Cathedral in London. In 1691 he succeeded sancroft as Archbishop of Canterbury. He was a determined opponent of Roman Catholicism and he was a friend to all Protestants, however non-conforming. However, he is mainly remembered for his preaching; he himself described his style as ‘plain and unaffected’, but it was widely imitated throughout the eighteenth century.
